PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a gas detection method which enables the execution of the detection of gas in a sufficiently efficient manner and a gas detector, and to achieve the sufficient miniaturization of the gas detector. ŽSOLUTION : The gas detection method includes the process for bringing an inspection target gas containing a combustible gas and a catalyst 3a containing a rare earth element into contact with each other to produce the oxidation reaction of the combustible gas and measuring the emission spectrum produced from the rare earth element by the oxidation reaction. The catalyst 3a contains at least a first catalyst carrier having electric insulating properties, a first catalyst component containing a first rare earth element, a second catalyst carrier having electric insulating properties, and a second catalyst component containing a second rare earth element.
