PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To protect an underlying coating or substrate from hot corrosion initiated by molten salts.
SOLUTION : A coating system 14 is on a superalloy- or silicon-containing substrate 12 of an article 10 exposed to a high temperature. The coating system 14 covers the upside of the substrate 12, and contains coating layers 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24 susceptible to high-temperature corrosion promoted by molten salt impurities. An anticorrosive film 26 covers the upside of the coating layers 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24, and contains one or more rare earth oxide-containing compounds to form a dense and protective by-product barrier layer 28 by reacting with the molten salt impurities.
