A multicore amplifying optical fiber comprising : a plurality of core sections to which a rare earth element has been added; an internal cladding section positioned on the outer periphery of the plurality of core sections and having a lower refractive index than the refractive index of the plurality of core sections; and an external cladding layer positioned on the outer periphery of the internal cladding section and having a lower refractive index than the refractive index of the internal cladding section. The internal cladding section has an area including at least one core section among the plurality of core sections and the area has a refractive index distribution shape whereby the refractive index increases towards the at least one core section. As a result, variation in optical amplification characteristics between each core section is reduced. |
