PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metal extracting agent in which separation coefficient of metals is high and solubility into water is low in solvent extraction for extracting or selectively separating metals especially rare earth metals.
SOLUTION : The metal extracting agent comprises phenylphosphonic ester shown by general formula (1) [wherein R1 is a hydrocarbon group in which the number of branched carbons is four to 6 the number of total carbons is 16 to 20, R2 is a substitutional group selected from a group comprising a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, and a 1-3C hydrocarbon group, m is a number of one to three (R2 may be the same or different in the case m is two to three), M is a hydrogen atom or an alkaline metal atom].
