The purpose of the present invention is to provide a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, a positive electrode using that active material, and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery using that positive electrode that can improve initial discharge capacity and restrict reductions in charge voltage and reductions in battery capacity even with repeated charging and discharging cycles. This positive electrode active material is characterized by containing lithium, nickel, and manganese and having lithium/transition-metal composite oxide particles (21) , which have a layered structure, and compound particles (22), which adhere to the surface of these lithium/transition-metal composite oxide particles (21) and have at least one element selected from rare earth elements having an atomic number of 59 - 71. |
