The present invention relates to the use of rare earth metal-containing mixed oxide catalysts for basic heterogeneously catalyzed preparing a chemical compound, in particular for the production of fatty acid alkyl esters by transesterification of triglycerides and for the production of base-catalysed α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds by aldol condensation of carbonyl compounds.
