[Problem] To provide : a process for manufacturing aluminum nitride which exhibits high thermal conductivity and excellent filling properties and is useful as a filler for heat-releasing material; and an aluminum nitride powder obtained by the process. [Solution] An aluminum nitride powder is manufactured by subjecting both an alumina or alumina hydrate powder which has a primary particle diameter of 0.001 to 6μm and a powder which consists essentially of a compound containing a rare earth metal element and which has a median particle diameter that falls within the range of 2 to 80μm and that is at least six times the primary particle diameter of the alumina or alumina hydrate powder to reductive nitriding in the presence of carbon powder at 1620 to 1900°C for two ore more hours. |
