PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To efficiently collect a rare earth element from an alloy containing a rare earth element and iron.
SOLUTION : The method of collecting a rare earth element from an alloy containing a rare earth element and iron is characterized by including a dissolving process in which at least a part of the alloy is dissolved by an aqueous solution containing at least one sort chosen from iron chloride (III), iron sulfate (III), and iron nitrate (III). The aqueous solution is desirably an aqueous solution containing iron chloride (III). Moreover, the method may include an oxidation process in which an oxidizing agent is added into a solution obtained in the dissolving process, and thereby which oxidizes an iron (II) ion contained in the solution to an iron (III) ion.
