An illumination device comprises a body arranged for providing a region of space accommodating a quantity of photoluminescent material (said material being preferably a rare earth and/or boron doped strontium aluminate or halogenated alkali earth metal aluminate). Said device is designed such that it can be removably arranged or integrally attached to an article such as a garment, backpack, buoyant article, boat, fishing rod, tent peg, collar, zipper, whistle or novelty device. Methods of manufacture of such a device also provided, both as a closed container in which photoluminescent material is provided, and as a substrate on which photoluminescent material is applied and subsequently covered by a covering layer. |
