A magnetic levitation system comprises a base; a body e.g. a frame 28, at least one magnetic unit having a first and second transversely spaced magnetic members 24 attached to the base, and a third magnetic member 22 attached to the body, the magnetic units being rare earth permanent magnets. In use, the third magnetic member sits above the space between the first and second magnetic members due to the arrangement of poles of the members urging the body to levitate in a levitation direction that is substantially perpendicular to the transverse direction. The first and second magnetic members are substantially longer than the third magnetic member in a longitudinal direction that is substantially perpendicular to both the transverse and the levitation directions. Multiple units may be used and arranged so as to stabilize movement transverse of the base and at least one superconducting unit comprising a superconductor and a plurality of electro magnets may be associated with the base to repel a fourth body mounted magnetic member. The frame may support a model e.g. a vehicle in a wind tunnel, a frame damping sheet or a rolling road passing between the vehicle and the levitation system. |
