PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for effectively separating and recovering rare earth elements from a raw material containing the rare earth elements and a metal element other than the rare earth elements.
SOLUTION : A separation method includes : an oxidation treatment step of obtaining an oxidized raw material by applying oxide treatment; a carbon source mixing step of mixing a carbon source; and a heat treatment step of heat-treating in a chlorine atmosphere after the oxidation treatment step and the carbon source mixing step, with respect to the raw materials containing the rare earth elements and the metal element other than the rare earth elements.
