PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To improve pumping efficiency of a cladding pumped optical amplifier using an optical fiber that includes : a core doped with a rare earth metal; an inner cladding provided around the core and having a refractive index lower than the refractive index of the core; and an outer cladding provided around the inner cladding and having a refractive index lower than the refractive index of the inner cladding. SOLUTION : The cladding pumped optical amplifier 20 is provided with an optical fiber grating for combining a guided mode contributing to pumping the rare earth metal with a guided mode not contributing to pumping the rare earth metal out of a plurality of guided modes of pumped light entering the amplifier 20.
