PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a crystal body for a magnetooptical element having a large Verdet constant and being grown from a melt in the form of a large size single crystal having the large Verdet constant at a low cost by reducing the use amount of a rare and inexpensive raw material component.
SOLUTION : A garnet crystal for a magnetooptical element is grown from a melt by adding scandium, an element L and an element M in such a ratio that the elemental percentages of Sc, L and M are 100-X-Y, X, and Y, respectively, (wherein L is at least one kind of element selected from magnesium and calcium, M is at least one kind of element selected from zirconium and hafnium, 5≤X≤30, 5≤Y≤30, and 0.9≤X/Y≤1.1) to a terbium-aluminum garnet.
