PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a lamp unit for reading an original which allows connecting leads to be routed simply, and lights in length directions of rare gas fluorescent lamps of an external electrode type simultaneously. SOLUTION : The lamp unit for reading an original electrically connects one end of a first external electrode prepared for one rare gas fluorescent lamp of the external electrode type and one end of a third external electrode prepared for the other rare gas fluorescent lamp of the external electrode type at the end side in the length direction of a luminous tube, and electrically connects one end of a second external electrode prepared for the rare gas fluorescent lamp of the external electrode type, and one end of a fourth external electrode prepared for the other rare gas fluorescent lamp of the external electrode type at the end side of the length direction of a luminous tube.
