PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a cold cathode element of which variation in electron emission property is made smaller than conventional one, and to provide its manufacturing method as well. SOLUTION : The cold cathode display device 100 comprises a cold cathode element 10 and an anode substrate 50. The cold cathode element 10 comprises a cathode bus-bar 12 formed on a glass substrate 11, an insulation layer 13 formed on the bus-bar 12, a gate electrode 14 formed on the insulation layer 13, and a carbon based cold cathode 15 prepared on the cathode bus-bar 12 to emit electrons. The anode substrate 50 comprises an anode electrode 52 formed on a class substrate 51 to catch electrons and a fluorescent surface 53 which emit light by electron collision. The carbon based cold cathode 15 is made up of either of metals, alloys or admixtures containing at least one of transition metals, noble metals or rare earth elements trough meditaion of a catalyst material with which oxide is mixed.
