PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an organic EL element which sufficiently secures electron injectability, and which is capable of maintaining light transmittance. ŽSOLUTION : The organic EL element is constituted of an anode 2, an organic layer 10, and a cathode 3 which are on a substrate 1, while an interlayer 20 with a thickness of 5-50 nm is arranged between the organic layer 10 and the cathode 3. In this case, the interlayer 20 contains metal halide consisting of a metal, selected from alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, and rare earth metal; and a metal selected from alkaline earth metal, rare earth metal, Ag, Al, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pd, and Zn. The influence on a chelate material in the organic layer 10 due to the metal of the cathode 3 is suppressed by the interlayer 20 to suppress the decomposition of the chelate material, while the electron injection can be improved by semiconductive characteristics which are realized by mixing the alkali metal or the like with the metal halide.
