PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an environmental barrier coating to protect CMC (Ceramic Matrix Composite) from the high temperature steam environments present in gas turbine engines.
SOLUTION : The environmental barrier coating includes : at least one transition layer 16 made from a transition layer slurry comprising : from about 1 wt.% to about 99.9 wt.% water; from about 0.1 wt.% to about 72 wt.% primary transition material; from about 0.1 wt.% to about 59.3 wt.% Lnb rare earth metal slurry sintering aid; at least one transition layer 16 produced from a transition layer slurry composed of about 0.1 wt.% to about 20.6 wt.% SiO2 slurry sintering aid; optionally, any one or more of : an outer layer 20 made from an outer layer slurry comprising : from about 1 wt.% to about 99.9 wt.% water; and from about 0.1 wt.% to about 72 wt.% primary outer material; and a compliant layer 18 made from a pliable layer slurry comprising : from about 1 wt.% to about 99.9 wt.% water; and from about 0.1 wt.% to about 72 wt.% primary pliable material.
