PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide an energy transfer type fluorescent material using an inorganic material, and to provide a method for producing the fluorescent material. ŽSOLUTION : A fluorescent material 100 comprises at least a pair of semiconductor layers 110 and a rare earth ion layer 120, wherein the semiconductor layer has negative charge, the rare earth ion layer has positive charge and contains at least one rare earth ion, each of the semiconductor layers and each of the rare earth ion layers are laminated to adjoin each other, and energy EDof the semiconductor donor level and energy EReof the excited state of at least one rare earth ion satisfy a relation ED>ERe. The process for producing the fluorescent material comprises a step for purifying a suspension containing the semiconductor layer, a step for preparing a reaction solution containing the rare earth ion and a step for mixing the suspension and the reaction solution.
