PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a method for making an environmental barrier coating for a ceramic component which is suitable for use in a high temperature water vapor environment present in a gas turbine engine.
SOLUTION : The method for making an environmental barrier coating 12 comprises : a step for mixing an organic solvent, and a primary transition material such as a rare earth disilicate, or a doped rare earth disilicate to produce a transition layer slurry; a step for mixing an organic solvent, and a primary outer member composed of an rare earth monosilicate, or a doped rare earth monosilicate to produce an external layer slurry; a step for mixing an organic solvent, and a primary compliant material composed of BSAS, or rare earth doped BSAS to produce a compliant layer slurry; and a step for applying one or more selected from the transition layer slurry, the external layer slurry and the compliant layer slurry to a component 10, applying a sol-gel solution containing an aqueous solution of a water soluble salt sintering aid, or an organic solvent solution of a solvent soluble salt sintering aid into the applied slurry, and sintering the component 10.
