简介 A method of producing titanium by reacting titanium oxide which comprises at least 1.0 % by weight of impurities to form a titanium oxycarbide, forming the titanium oxycarbide into an anode and using this in an electrolysis cell whereby refined titanium metal is recovered from a cathode in the cell. The titanium oxide may be titanium dioxide, for example an ore or an ore concentrate with silicon, aluminium, iron, calcium, chromium and/or vanadium oxide impurities. The oxycarbide may be formed by reacting titanium oxide with titanium carbide, e.g. 4TiC + 2TiO2---> 3Ti2CO + CO(g). Electrolysis may be performed using a molten alkali or alkali-earth metal chloride such as sodium chloride—potassium chloride eutectic or lithium chloride-sodium chloride—potassium chloride eutectic.
