A catalyst suitable for producing an unsaturated alcohol; and a process for efficiently producing an unsaturated alcohol from an a, ?-diol while inhibiting the generation of a by-product. The catalyst is characterized by containing one or more rare-earth metal oxides in an amount of at least 10 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the catalyst. The catalyst may contain at least either of the rare-earth metal oxides consisting of terbium oxide and ytterbium oxide. In the process, a catalyst comprising either a rare-earth metal oxide or a rare-earth metal oxide deposited on a support substance is used to produce an unsaturated alcohol. |
