PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To solve the problem that a conventional classifier for earth and sand slurry using a settling tank is difficult of the regulation of a flow rate in the settling tank, and of an improvement in classification precision, and requires pump equipment for repressure-feeding if a facility for treating classified drainage is detachedly located, or the like. SOLUTION : The classifier for the earth and sand slurry is closed and is provided with an earth and sand slurry inlet 10, a drainage outlet 3 set at the upper part, a sediment discharge outlet 9 set on the bottom surface which can be opened and closed, a means for pouring the earth and sand slurry into the slurry inlet, and a means for discharging surplus water from the drainage outlet. Furthermore, a detecting means for detecting a passage velocity and a sediment amount of the slurry in the settling tank is provided in order to control the slurry passage velocity in the settling tank by changing the slurry passage cross-section area in the settling tank according to the detected value. In the earth and sand slurry classification method, two or more units of the settling tanks 8 are installed and are alternately operated when a required amount of sediment accumulates.
