PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnetic recording medium, having an output and S/N ratio which adaptable to a large storage capacity of 100 GB or larger and which is superior high-density recording characteristics. ŽSOLUTION : The magnetic recording medium is provided with an undercoat layer and a magnetic layer formed on at least one side of a nonmagnetic base material. In this case, a ferromagnetic alloy powder of average axial length of 90 nm or smaller, which contains Co and rare earth element, is used as a magnetic powder constituting the magnetic layer, and the thickness of the magnetic layer containing the ferromagnetic alloy powder is set to at most 0.15 μm. The magnetic layer is formed, by using a magnetic paint manufactured by a process, in which the binder resin and the magnetic powder are kneaded with a continuous two-shaft kneader, under the condition of solid content being 75 to 85 wt.% and the ratio of the binder to the magnetic powder is 15 to 30 wt.%.
