Optical fibers for use as a laser medium in fiber lasers comprise a core (200) which is doped with a laser-active material, especially rare earth atoms. A microstructured sheath (300, 350) surrounds this. The core and/or sheath is made from a silicate glass containing lithium and aluminum, a heavy metal oxide glass, quartz glass, phosphate glass, separated phase glass, glasses with domains and/or glass ceramics based on the glasses. Independent claims are included for : (a) a method for making the fibers using a crucible with a double outlet and optionally a mold which forms the molten glass into the fiber; (b) high power lasers containing a fiber as described; (c) use of the optical fibers as laser medium in high power lasers; and (d) use of the fibers in short pulse lasers. |
