PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare gas discharge lamp capable of extending a light modulation range, since startability is improved, even when a light modulation ratio is small, without generating excessive ripples and noise in the output of an AC/DC conversion part.
SOLUTION : In this rare gas discharge lamp lighting device 10, a light modulation circuit 4 is connected between an input power supply Vin and a switching circuit 1, connected to the primary side of a high voltage transformer T1, and the light modulation circuit 4 inputs a light modulation signal output from a light modulation control circuit 3, and supplies a high-frequency pulse voltage which is synchronized with the timing of the rise/fall of a pulse voltage impressed on the switching circuit 1 from a drive circuit 2 to the input part of the switching circuit 1, by superimposing it over a dc voltage, when it is in a steady state during light modulation; and thereby, a voltage higher than that in the steady state is impressed on the rare gas discharge lamp DL.
