PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a glow starter for starting a high-pressure discharge lamp, capable of performing ultraviolet rays irradiation with a wavelength of 300 nm or less without sealing mercury and generating starting pulse voltage, a high-pressure discharge lamp using the glow starter for starting a high-pressure discharge lamp, and a lighting device for high-pressure discharge lamp. SOLUTION : The glow starter 18a for starting a high-pressure discharge lamp comprises a discharge vessel 1 made of material capable of substantially transmitting ultraviolet rays with a wavelength of 300 nm or less caused by rare gas discharge, such as soft glass, a pair of electrodes 2, 2 sealed in the inside of the discharge vessel 1 in such a manner that they are displaced by heat generated by glow discharge and contact with each other, and a discharge medium sealed in the discharge vessel 1, main constituent of which is rare gas. The transmittance of the discharge vessel 1 against ultraviolet rays with a wavelength of 300 nm is 20% and preferably 40% or more; and the ionization medium is preferably argon. |
