PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To improve an SNR by devising elements which constitute soft magnetic layers, thereby increasing Hex in the soft magnetic layers.
SOLUTION : The vertical magnetic recording medium 100 includes, on a disk substrate 110, at least a first soft magnetic layer 114a, a nonmagnetic spacer layer 114b, a second soft magnetic layer 114c, and a magnetic recording layer 122, in this order. The first soft magnetic layer 114a and the second soft magnetic layer 114c constitute antiferromagnetic exchange coupling. The first soft magnetic layer 114a and the second soft magnetic layer 114c contain rare earth metal.
