PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a rare earth nitride excellent in stability in air, which can be used for a magnetic refrigeration material and a cold storage material to be used in various refrigeration systems, and to provide a production method of the nitride.
SOLUTION : A rare earth nitride expressed by composition formula of MN (wherein M represents at least one element selected from rare earth elements including Y (yttrium) and Sc (scandium)), in the form of approximately spherical particles having an aspect ratio of not more than 3.0, and having a carbon content of not more than 0.3 mass% is used for a magnetic refrigeration material or a cold storage material. The rare earth nitride is obtained by nitriding spherical metal particles of the rare earth element.
