PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a cerium abradant having higher performance than the performance of the conventional abradant with respect to abrasion properties such as cleanability, initial speed of abrasion, persistence of the speed of abrasion, and accuracy in abrasion. SOLUTION : In the cerium abradant having rare earth oxides containing cerium oxide as the major component, abrasive grains of the abradant having a ratio of cerium oxide (CeO2) to the total rare earth oxides (TREO) of ≥40 mass%, a condensed phosphate having a solubility in water of ≥2 g/L, and a carbonate or a hydrogencarbonate having a solubility in water of ≥1 g/L are incorporated.
