Abstract Grate magnets are used in industry to remove iron contamination from food, chemicals and plastics. They typically comprise rare earth or ferrite magnet elements within non-magnetic stainless steel tubes which are ganged together to form a grid of parallel rows. Any magnetic particles within non-magnetic powder or granular product flowing through the grate are attracted to and retained on the tubes. Some powdered products are inclined to bridge or block conventional grate magnets. Various methods are used such as applied vibration to minimise blockage. The current invention describes a method by which the tubes of the grate magnet are free to move within constraints and are caused to be agitated within those constraints by the actual flow of product through them, such activation assisting in prevention of bridging and blockage across the tubes. |
