PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a gas sensor element in which the thermal expansion coefficient difference between ceramic insulating layers holding a heating source therebetween and a solid electrolyte layer is made smaller and the ceramic insulating layers composing a heater are densified so that it is made unnecessary to cover the periphery of the ceramic insulating layers with a solid electrolyte layer.
SOLUTION : A gas sensor element 100 includes : a cell 1 that has a solid electrolyte layer 11 extending in the longitudinal direction and a pair of electrodes 131, 132 disposed on the surface of the solid electrolyte layer; and a heater 2 that has a heating source 21 and a pair of ceramic insulating layers 22, 23 extending in the longitudinal direction and holding the heating source therebetween and that is laminated on the cell. The solid electrolyte layer is mainly composed of zirconia and moreover contains alumina. The ceramic insulating layer is mainly composed of alumina, and moreover contains 3-20 mol%, in terms of oxide, of one or more kinds of rare earth elements with an ionic radius larger than Y. The width dimensions of the solid electrolyte layer and the ceramic insulating layer in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction are the same.
