PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metal halide lamp having a small chromatic deflection of a white color and a high efficiency and a high color rendering property and a long life and moreover inhibiting boosting of a flame failure voltage even if it is lit by a mercury lamp stabilizer.
SOLUTION : The metal halide lamp is provided with a discharge medium enclosed inside a translucent ceramic airtight vessel 1, containing halide of at least Na, Ce, Tm and Ca with a ratio RE/MH of 3 to 20 mol% wherein a total enclosed amount of halide rare earth metal is RE as against a total enclosed amount MH of halide light emitting metal and with a mol ratio CeX/TmX in a range of 0.3 to 1 wherein an enclosed amount of halide Ce is CeX as against an enclosed amount TmX of halide Tm and with a mol ratio (CaX+NaX)/RE of 4 to 10 wherein a total enclosed amount of halide Ca and halide Na is (CaX+NaX) as against a total enclosed amount RE of the halide rare earth metal.
