Disclosed is a process for producing a benzaldehyde compound represented by formula (3) [wherein Q represents a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom; and Ar represents a phenyl group which may be substituted by at least one group selected from the group consisting of an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and a halogen atom], which is characterized by comprising the steps of : reacting a benzal halide compound represented by formula (1) [wherein X represents a halogen atom; and Q and Ar are as defined above] with an alcoholic compound in the presence of at least one alkali earth metal compound selected from the group consisting of an alkali earth metal oxide, an alkali earth metal hydroxide and an alkali earth metal carbonate to yield a corresponding acetal compound; and reacting the acetal compound with water in the presence of an acid. |
