PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a permanent magnet and a method for producing the same in which production time can be shortened; coercive force characteristics can be made uniform even when the magnet is large; the amount of a rare earth element to be added can be reduced and simultaneously coercive force can be increased; and reduction of magnetization can be prevented.
SOLUTION : In step S1, magnetic powder and a substance containing a rare earth element are prepared. The magnetic powder is a flat powder having a higher hardness than the substance containing a rare earth element. In step S2, the surface of the flat magnetic powder is coated with the substance containing a rare earth element. In step S3, the magnetic powder coated with the substance containing a rare earth element on the surface thereof is subjected to hot compression molding to produce a molded product. In step S4, the molded product is subjected to hot plastic working to impart anisotropy thereto. In step S5, the molded product to which anisotropy is imparted is subjected to machining, and then, if necessary, the molded product machined into a desired shape is heat-treated.
