PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp with a compatibility with a mercury containing general lighting purpose metal halide lamp, a ballast and a lighting fixture, and provide a lighting device using the above lamp.
SOLUTION : The high-pressure discharge lamp is provided with an arc tube IT equipped with a translucent airtight vessel 1 in which a discharge space 1c is provided, a pair of electrodes 2, 2 arranged in the translucent airtight vessel so as to be located in the discharge space, and an ionized medium which contains rare gas and metal halide with the rare gas having a xenon body of one to five atmospheric pressures at 25°C of the atmospheric temperature and not containing mercury and which is enclosed in the translucent airtight vessel, an outer tube OT in which the arc tube is housed, and a starting assistant means TW, UVE which are arranged inside the outer tube and assist so that discharging can be started in the arc tube when a starting high voltage of 5 kV or lower is impressed between the pair of electrodes.
