PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a magnesium-based composite material having excellent performance, such as strength characteristics, not only at normal temperature but also at high temperature.
SOLUTION : The magnesium-based composite material is obtained by the solid phase reaction of a magnesium alloy and added material. The added material is one or more selected from the oxide, carbide, silicide and carbonate of rare earth metals, Sr or Ba, and the carbide, silicide and carbonate of Ca, and the magnesium-based composite material includes an intermetallic compound formed by the solid phase reaction. The added material can be dispersed together with the intermetallic compound within the magnesium-based composite material.
