PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a light emitting diode achieving white light of uniform tone and long service life.
SOLUTION : The light emitting diode 1A includes a gallium nitride substrate 15, an active layer 5 of a nitride semiconductor formed on a main surface 15a of the gallium nitride substrate 15 and a light emitting layer 10 of a nitride semiconductor containing rare earth elements and having first to third nitride semiconductor layers 11-13 absorbing ultraviolet rays Lu generated from the active layer 5 to respectively emit a red light ray Lr, a green light ray Lg and a blue light ray Lb.
