PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a discharge lamp with high luminous efficiency by reducing an effect of shading of a metal halide.
SOLUTION : The discharge lamp includes an airtight container 1 having a discharge portion 11 in which a discharge space 14 is formed and a pair of sealing portions 12a, 12b formed at both ends of the discharge portion 11, a discharge medium including a metal halide 2 and a rare gas filled into the discharge space 14, and a pair of electrodes 3a2, 3b2 of which one end is installed at the sealing portions 12a, 12b and the other end is arranged in opposition in the discharge space 14, and the discharge lamp is lighted with the tube axis in nearly horizontal state. The thickness of the lower part of the discharge portion 11 is thinner, and the filling amount of the metal halide 2 is 0.015 mg/mm3 or less.
