PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a fiber laser capable of improving a laser output status at the time of a start-up of the fiber laser and of forming a clear marking by uniform lines.
SOLUTION : A method of operating the fiber laser comprises the steps of : using the fiber laser providing a double cladding fiber having a core portion to which a rare earth element is added, means for carrying out an incidence of a signal light to the core portion of the double cladding fiber, and means for carrying out an incidence of a pumping light with a wavelength different from that of the signal light to the core portion or an interior cladding portion of the double cladding fiber; carrying out the incidence of the pumping light from at least one end of the double cladding fiber; further carrying out the incidence of the signal light from one end; and outputting an amplification light to which a laser oscillation of a wavelength of the signal light is carried out from other end, characterized in that when making a fiber laser output into a ready state, after holding a power of the pumping light to which an incidence is carried out with a power larger than zero during a fixed time, there is performed an incident light power control which makes the power of the pumping light to which the incidence is carried out into a power of zero.
