PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a blue phosphor that exhibits satisfactory color purity at an intermediate to low accelerating voltage at most around 15 kV, secures the linearity of luminance in a high electric current region and emits a light stably for charge supply.
SOLUTION : The blue phosphor comprises a rare earth-activated alkaline earth thiosilicate represented by general formula : M1xM22-xSi2OyS6-yRaz (wherein M1 and M2 are each an alkaline earth metal; Ra is Ce3+ or Eu2+ as a rare earth ion; 0≤x≤2; 00 and b*<0 at a D65 light source and a visual angle of 2° and, when plotted on an L*a*b* color specification system chromaticity diagram, gives a line connecting it to the origin which intersects the a* axis with an angle ϕ falling within the range of 39<ϕ<60.
