PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide glass which allows a large aperture core and/or high doping.
SOLUTION : There is included a glass composition which is doped with rare earth and may be used by a rod and an optical fiber of a large core size. The optical fiber and the rod may be used for a fiber laser and a fiber amplifier. The refractive index of the glass may be substantially uniform, or may be close to that of silica depending on the embodiment. Available advantages from the features include the suppression of the formation of an additional waveguide path in a core, thus becoming more important as the size of a core becomes large.
