PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a carbonaceous substance suitable as the electrode material of an electrical double layer capacitor or the like.
SOLUTION : The carbonaceous substance is characterized in that the total content of metal elements selected from the metal element group comprising alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and rare earth metals is 100-2, 000 ppm, the interplanar spacing d002 measured by X-ray diffraction is 0.344-0.365 nm, and the spontaneous potential is 1.50-2.85 V when the potential is measured by using Li as a counter electrode in a propylene carbonate solution containing LiBF4 in concentration of 1.0 mol/L. The carbonaceous substance is obtained by mixing the metals or compounds containing the metals with a carbonaceous raw material having an interplanar spacing d002 of 0.344-0.365 as measured by X-ray diffraction, then holding the resulting mixture for at least 10 min at 500-1, 300°C and washing/drying the heat treated mixture.
