PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a metal halide lamp having a translucent ceramic airtight container of which the outer tube hardly receives damages at the time of burst of an arc tube, and to provide a lighting apparatus using the same.
SOLUTION : The metal halide lamp is equipped with an arc tube which is provided with a translucent ceramic airtight container with a total length of LP (mm) having an envelope part and a pair of small-diameter tube parts, a pair of electrodes, a pair of current introducing conductors, a pair of seal parts which seal the translucent ceramic airtight container over a length LF (mm) in tube axis direction between the small-diameter tube part and the current introducing conductor, and a discharge medium containing a metal halide and rare gas; a shroud of tube shape made of a hyaline member of which length LS (mm) in tube axis direction satisfies a formula : LS
