PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To efficiently form a fine pattern with a high precision in the surface or the inside of glass at a low cost.
SOLUTION : A method for processing a glass material comprises locally forming a foreign layer in the surface or the inside of glass, obtained by adding at least one kind selected from titanium, iron, nickel, cobalt, manganese, vanadium, and copper to a glass base material containing a specific glass forming oxide and at least one kind selected from an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, a transition element, and a rare earth element, and then removing the foreign layer or the peripheral part of the foreign layer by bringing the glass with the foreign layer into contact with an etching agent.
