PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a surface treatment liquid containing no harmful ingredient to the environment for an iron material, which can form a surface treatment coating film superior in corrosion resistance after having been painted or corrosion resistance in a bare state, on the surface of the iron material such as a hot-rolled steel plate and a cold-rolled steel sheet which are used in building materials, home electric appliances and the like.
SOLUTION : The surface treatment liquid for the iron material comprises : (a) zirconic fluoride; (b) ions of a rare earth element and/or a compound of the rare earth element; (c) polyallylamine; (d) aluminum ions, and (e) free fluorine ions. A mass concentration (A) of zirconium in the component (a) is 10 to 1, 000 ppm; a ratio (K) (=B/A) of the mass concentration (B) of the rare earth element in the component (b) to the mass concentration (A) is 0.1 to 30; a mass concentration (D) of the component (d) is 50 to 250 ppm; and a mass concentration (E) of the component (e) is 0.5 to 30 ppm.
