A solid solution crystal phase phosphor which comprises an inorganic compound having a crystal structure being the same as that of the CaSiAlN3 crystal phase as a base crystal and M [wherein M represents one or more elements selected from among Mn, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu] being added as a luminescent center; and a white light emitting diode using the above phosphor. The above phosphor is an inorganic phosphor having fluorescent characteristics suitable for emitting an orange or red light, which has a wave length greater than that of a light emitted by a conventional sialon phosphor activated with a rare earth element, and the above white light emitting diode is rich in a reddish component and exhibits good color rendering.
