PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas, which achieves the PM combustion efficiency nearly equal to that of the conventional catalyst and has excellent ability to oxidize/remove CO and HC.
SOLUTION : The catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas is provided with : a filter base material 1 in which an upstream cell 13a, the upstream side of which is opened to a flow direction of exhaust gas and the downstream side of which is sealed/plugged, and a downstream cell 13b, the upstream side of which is sealed/plugged and the downstream side of which is opened, are formed while interposing a porous partition wall between them; a noble metal deposited on the filter base material 1; and an alkali metal and/or an alkaline-earth metal deposited on the filter base material 1. The amount of the alkali metal and/or alkaline-earth metal to be deposited per unit volume of the filter base material 1 in a upstream-side portion 1a is made larger than that of the alkali metal and/or alkaline-earth metal to be deposited per unit volume thereof in a downstream-side portion 1b.
