The invention relates to an optical amplifier (10, 60) for amplifying optical signals, the optical amplifier including at least one pump laser (18, 64) for producing pump radiation, a rare earth optical media (16, 62) that is arranged to be optically pumped by the pump laser (18, 64) to produce optical gain of the optical signals, and a control unit (32) having at least one optical monitor (26, 30) for measuring the optical signals in the optical amplifier (10, 60), the control unit (32) adapted to control the pump laser (18, 64) based on measured optical signals characterized in that the at least one pump laser (18, 64) is arranged to produce radiation at a first pump power and a second pump power, the first pump power being below a lasing threshold power of the laser (18, 64) and the second pump power being above the lasing threshold power of the laser (18, 64) and that the control unit (32) is arranged to alternate the pump laser (18, 64) between the first and second pump powers. |
