PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a high-durability optical element having the property of upconversion light emitting and/or optical amplification.
SOLUTION : The optical element exhibits the property of at least one of upconversion light emitting and optical amplification upon irradiation with excitation light, and contains bulk glass containing titanium oxide as a main component, wherein the glass further contains a rare earth element. For example, at least one of Er and Yb or a combination of Yb and Tm is preferably used as the rare earth element.
