This invention provides an optical fiber for amplification for an L band, which can suppress an increase in transmission loss and a deterioration in hydrogen resistance, and an optical amplifier comprising the optical fiber. The optical fiber for amplification is an optical fiber of a quartz glass base and comprises a core region containing an erbium element and not less than 2 wt% and not more than 5 wt% of a P element added thereto and free from Ge, and a clad region surrounding the core region and containing an F element added thereto. The optical fiber has a gain of optical amplification in the wavelength range of 1570 to 1620 nm. The optical fiber amplifier comprises an optical fiber for amplification, an excitation light source for outputting excitation light for exciting the rare earth element added to the core region in the optical fiber for amplification, and an optical coupler for introducing the excitation light output from the excitation light source into the optical fiber for amplification. |
